Introduction

Teeth whitening before and after

Whitening your teeth is a simple process that can make you look younger, more confident, and more content. It’s also an easy solution for anyone who wants to improve their smile without having to undergo invasive treatment or expensive procedures.

When you whiten your teeth, you’re removing surface stains caused by food, beverages, tobacco products, medications and other factors. This makes the color of your teeth brighter and whiter!

Whitening will help you look younger because it improves the appearance of your smile. You’ll feel more confident about yourself and the way you look when your pearly whites are whiter than ever before!

If you’re looking to have whiter teeth and a whiter smile then this dental treatment is exactly what you need.

Reasons Why You May Need a Professional Teeth Cleaning

Teeth whitening is a common procedure that has been around for decades. While we all want to be able to have pearly white teeth, there are many other reasons why one may need professional teeth whitening.

Here are just a few of the reasons why you may need to have your teeth professionally whitened:

  1. Tooth sensitivity – Tooth sensitivity is a common problem that can be caused by several things including bacteria build up, deep scratches in tooth enamel and excessive fluoride exposure. If you have any of these problems and are experiencing pain when eating or drinking hot or cold foods, it could be caused by tooth sensitivity
  2. Cosmetic appearance – If you’re looking for a cosmetic improvement but don’t want to go under the knife, then having your teeth professionally whitened may be right for you. It’s also not uncommon for people who have had braces to want their teeth to match again after they’ve been removed.
  3. Tooth discolouration – Having tooth discolouration can make it difficult for people to smile comfortably or even eat certain foods without feeling self-conscious about their appearance. Those with yellowing teeth often feel embarrassed when they talk with others or even laugh loudly because it draws attention

Types Of Teeth Stains

Teeth stains are a problem for many people. The enamel on your teeth is what gives them their natural white color, but it can become discolored over time by things like coffee, tea, and tobacco use.

Dentists deal with many different kinds of stains when whitening one’s teeth. Some of the most common include:

  1. Tartar buildup: This is a yellowish material that develops on the surface of your teeth near the gum line. It’s caused by plaque that builds up on your teeth and hardens into tartar over time.
  2. Yellowing from ageing: This is a natural phenomenon that happens as we age, where our teeth start to look darker than they used to be due to years of wear and tear on their surface.
  3. Staining from drinking coffee or tea: These beverages contain tannins that can stain your teeth if you drink them frequently enough over time—even just once in a while!
  4. Discolouration from smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco: Both of these habits have been linked to yellowing of the teeth through their high levels of nicotine content (which contains tar), which causes staining over time as well).

Preparation

Before undergoing a teeth whitening process, it is important to schedule an appointment with your dentist to ensure that your teeth are healthy and free of any underlying issues that may affect the success of the treatment.

Your dentist will also evaluate the shade of your teeth to determine the most appropriate whitening treatment for you.

It is recommended that you brush and floss your teeth thoroughly prior to the appointment. Avoid consuming food and drinks that may stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and berries, for at least 24 hours before the procedure.

Procedure

Here’s what patients can expect during the procedure:

  1. Consultation: The dentist will begin by examining the patient’s teeth and discussing their goals for the treatment. They may also take photographs or impressions of the teeth to track progress and create custom whitening trays if necessary.
  2. Cleaning: The teeth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any plaque or debris before the whitening treatment begins. This helps ensure the best possible results and reduces the risk of sensitivity.
  3. Numbing: Some patients may require numbing or anesthesia to minimize discomfort during the procedure. This is more common for those with sensitive teeth or gums.
  4. Application of Whitening Gel: Once the teeth are clean and dry, the dentist will apply a whitening gel to the surface of the teeth. The gel typically contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which breaks down stains and discoloration on the enamel.
  5. Activation: The whitening gel is activated by a special light or laser, which helps speed up the whitening process. The gel is typically left on the teeth for 15-30 minutes, then rinsed off and reapplied for multiple rounds.”
  6. Final Cleaning: Once the desired level of whitening is achieved, the teeth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any remaining gel.
  7. Post-Treatment Care: The dentist will provide instructions on how to care for the teeth after the whitening treatment, including avoiding certain foods and drinks that can stain the teeth.

Common concerns about discomfort during the procedure include sensitivity to the whitening gel or the activation light. However, most patients do not experience significant pain or discomfort during the procedure.

The dental practice will work to minimize discomfort by applying a desensitizing gel or using a lower concentration of whitening gel for those with sensitive teeth or gums.

Patients can also ask for breaks or take pain medication as needed.

Overall, teeth whitening is a safe and effective cosmetic dental procedure that can dramatically improve the appearance of the teeth.

Benefits

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental treatment that can provide a number of benefits, including:

  1. Improved appearance: Teeth whitening can help to remove stains and discoloration from the teeth, resulting in a brighter, more attractive smile.
  2. Boosted self-confidence: A brighter smile can help to boost your self-confidence and self-esteem, making you feel more comfortable in social situations.
  3. Safe and effective: When performed by a qualified dental professional, teeth whitening is a safe and effective treatment with minimal side effects.

Aftercare

After undergoing a teeth whitening procedure, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene habits to ensure that your results last as long as possible.

This includes brushing and flossing your teeth regularly and avoiding food and drinks that may stain your teeth.

You may experience some sensitivity in your teeth following the procedure, but this should subside within a few days. If you experience any persistent discomfort, be sure to contact your dentist for further advice.

It is also recommended to schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings to maintain the health of your teeth and gums.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can always submit a contact request if you have more questions or email info@everysmile.co.za

Most of the time, our quick, in-office whitening treatments just take an hour! In our welcoming office, you can unwind while watching TV or using our free internet to submit films and pictures of your teeth-whitening experience.

We’ll be there to bring you anything you need, of course! Once every few months or up to several times each week until the desired result is obtained, at-home whitening trays can be utilized.

After an in-office procedure, at-home trays are excellent for preserving shade because they offer a more gradual transition. Results differ from person to person and depend on the type and intensity of staining.

Sensitivity to the teeth and gums might result in teeth whitening. While some individuals may only need to reduce the bleaching’s intensity and duration to minimize sensitivity, other patients may need to.

Consult your dentist about strategies to reduce sensitivity, and always have a qualified professional do the treatment.

Your dentist might propose using a particular toothpaste both before and after the operation, as well as only recommending specific kinds of whitening.

In most cases, taking an over-the-counter pain killer can help to lessen the symptoms if you do feel sensitivity after treatment.

There is nothing particular you need to do before whitening, but clean, healthy teeth free of plaque and tartar are ideal for the procedure.

Please make a visit about two weeks before the whitening to pick up a specific toothpaste if you are aware that you have sensitive teeth.

Teeth whitening is generally safe for most people, but there are some factors that can make it unsuitable for certain individuals. For example, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid teeth whitening due to potential risks to the developing fetus or nursing infant.

People with sensitive teeth, gum disease, or extensive dental work may also need to avoid teeth whitening or seek professional advice before proceeding. In addition, children under the age of 16 should avoid teeth whitening, as their teeth are still developing.

Before whitening your teeth, it is important to consider several factors. Firstly, it is important to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy before proceeding with any teeth whitening treatment.

If you have any dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, or sensitivity, you should consult a dental professional before whitening your teeth.

You should also consider the type of teeth whitening treatment that you want to use, as there are many options available, including over-the-counter products and professional treatments.

It is important to understand the potential risks and benefits of each treatment and to choose the one that is best for your needs.

Here are some interesting facts about teeth whitening:

  • The first recorded use of teeth whitening dates back to ancient Egypt, where people used a mixture of ground pumice and wine vinegar to whiten their teeth.
  • Teeth whitening can make you look younger. As we age, our teeth naturally become discolored, so whitening your teeth can give you a more youthful appearance.
  • Whitening toothpaste can help maintain the whiteness of your teeth but is not effective for removing deep stains or significantly whitening your teeth.
  • Some foods, such as blueberries and red wine, can cause staining on your teeth, making them appear darker. Drinking plenty of water and brushing your teeth regularly can help prevent these stains.

When whitening your teeth, it is important to avoid certain foods and drinks that can cause staining, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-colored fruits and vegetables. You should also avoid smoking, as it can cause severe staining and discoloration of your teeth.

In addition, it is important to follow the instructions carefully when using any teeth whitening products and to avoid overusing them, as this can cause damage to your teeth and gums.

Yellow teeth can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, aging, diet, tobacco use, and poor oral hygiene.

Teeth whitening treatments can often help to improve the appearance of yellow teeth, but the effectiveness of the treatment will depend on the cause of the discoloration.

The length of time that teeth whitening lasts can vary depending on the type of treatment used and individual factors such as diet and oral hygiene habits.

Generally, teeth whitening can last anywhere from several months to a year or more. It is recommended to wait at least six months between teeth whitening treatments.

While teeth whitening is generally safe, some people may experience side effects such as sensitivity, gum irritation, and temporary discoloration of the gums or lips.

These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own, but if they persist or become severe, you should consult a dental professional.

Teeth whitening treatments may not be suitable for people with braces or other dental work, such as fillings or crowns, as the whitening agents may not work on these materials.

In addition, teeth whitening can cause uneven coloration if it is performed on teeth that have different levels of discoloration.
