Introduction

Teeth with teeth jewellery

Dental teeth jewellery is a form of body modification that involves the placement of metal into the holes in teeth. It can be used to replace a missing tooth, to cover up a gap between two teeth, or to decorate the smile with a piece of jewellery.

Dental teeth jewellery works by placing a small screw into the hole in your tooth and attaching the jewellery piece on top of it. This can be done by either drilling into your tooth or by using an adhesive material. Tooth jewellery can be made of natural materials like gold or silver, or it can be made of porcelain or resin.

Preparation

Here are some general tips on how to prepare for a teeth jewellery procedure:

  1. Schedule an appointment with a reputable and experienced dentist who specialises in cosmetic dentistry. You may want to read reviews or ask for recommendations from family or friends.
  2. Communicate your expectations and preferences with the dentist during the initial consultation. This will help the dentist determine the best type, size, and placement of the teeth jewellery that will complement your smile.
  3. Make sure your teeth and gums are healthy before the procedure. The dentist may recommend a dental cleaning or any necessary treatments before placing the jewellery.
  4. Discuss the cost and any potential risks or complications with the dentist before the procedure.
  5. Avoid eating or drinking anything for a few hours before the procedure to ensure your mouth is clean and dry.
  6. Be prepared for some discomfort during the procedure, which may involve etching the tooth surface and applying a bonding agent to attach the jewellery.
  7. Follow the dentist’s post-procedure instructions carefully, including avoiding hard or sticky foods for a few days and practising good oral hygiene to maintain the jewellery’s longevity.

Remember, teeth jewellery is a purely cosmetic procedure and does not improve dental function or health. Therefore, it’s essential to maintain regular dental checkups and hygiene practices to ensure the health of your teeth and gums.

Procedure

Teeth jewellery is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves attaching small gems or diamonds to the surface of teeth using a dental adhesive. Here’s what patients can expect during the procedure itself:

  1. Consultation: The first step is to have a consultation with a dental professional who will assess the patient’s oral health and discuss the desired outcome of the procedure.
  2. Cleaning : Before the teeth jewellery is attached, the teeth will need to be thoroughly cleaned and polished to ensure a strong bond between the gems and the tooth surface.
  3. Numbing: Depending on the patient’s sensitivity, the dentist may administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area where the jewellery will be attached.
  4. Adhesive application: A dental adhesive is applied to the surface of the tooth where the jewellery will be placed.
  5. Placement: The dental professional will carefully place the jewellery onto the adhesive, using a specialised tool to ensure proper alignment and positioning.
  6. Curing: The adhesive is then cured, usually with a special light, to secure the jewellery to the tooth surface.

Overall, the teeth jewellery procedure is generally painless and minimally invasive, and patients can typically return to their normal activities immediately afterward.

However, some patients may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity during or after the procedure, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and should resolve within a few days.

Benefits

Teeth jewellery, also known as tooth gems or dental jewellery, are small, non-invasive accessories that are attached to the surface of the teeth for cosmetic purposes. Some benefits of teeth jewellery include:

  1. Enhancing smile aesthetics: Teeth jewellery can add an extra sparkle to your smile, making it more eye-catching and beautiful.
  2. Non-invasive procedure: The procedure for attaching teeth jewellery is minimally invasive, painless, and does not require anaesthesia.
  3. Temporary and reversible: Teeth jewellery can be easily removed by a dentist, without causing any damage to the teeth.
  4. Affordable: Teeth jewellery is a cost-effective way to add a unique and personalised touch to your smile.
  5. Safe: The materials used for teeth jewellery are safe, and the procedure does not harm the teeth or gums.
  6. Boosts confidence: Teeth jewellery can improve your self-esteem and give you a more confident and positive outlook.

It’s important to note that proper oral hygiene is still necessary when wearing teeth jewellery to prevent any dental issues.

Aftercare

  1. Do not manipulate tooth jewellery in any way.
  2. Eat nothing for an hour after the tooth jewellery has been applied, however you can drink water right after.
  3. For the first twelve hours, only eat soft foods.
  4. Wait 12 hours before you clean your teeth.
  5. After a jewel has been implanted, it is advised against using an electric toothbrush for the first 24 hours.

While there are several benefits to wearing teeth jewellery, there are also a few potential disadvantages that you should consider. For example:

  • The jewellery may interfere with proper oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing, which could lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • The jewellery may cause discomfort or irritation in some individuals.
  • The jewellery may break or fall off, which could pose a choking hazard.

The duration of tooth jewellery largely depends on the type of adhesive used to attach the jewellery to the tooth surface, as well as your oral hygiene practices. On average, tooth jewellery can last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. However, it’s important to note that regular dental check-ups and cleaning can help ensure that the tooth jewellery lasts as long as possible.

The procedure for placing tooth gems is relatively quick and straightforward. It typically takes 10-15 minutes per tooth, and the process involves cleaning the tooth surface, applying a bonding agent, and attaching the gem or jewellery.

People may choose to wear teeth jewellery for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • To enhance their smile aesthetics and add a unique touch to their appearance.
  • As a form of self-expression and individuality.
  • To celebrate a special occasion, such as a wedding or festival.
  • As a temporary alternative to more permanent cosmetic dental procedures.

Teeth jewellery can last for several months or even years, depending on the type of adhesive used and how well you take care of your teeth. It’s important to avoid eating hard or sticky foods, and to brush and floss your teeth regularly to maintain the longevity of your teeth jewellery.

No, teeth jewellery does not damage the teeth when applied correctly by a trained dental professional. The dental adhesive used to bond the gems or diamonds to the teeth is safe for dental use and does not damage the tooth enamel.

Yes, teeth jewellery can be removed by a dental professional. The gems or diamonds are gently scraped off the surface of the teeth, and any remaining adhesive is polished off with a dental drill.
