Introduction

dentures on the table

At Every Smile Dentistry, we understand the importance of having a complete set of teeth. Missing teeth can affect your ability to eat, speak, and even smile confidently.

Dentures are removable dental appliances that can replace missing teeth and improve your oral health and quality of life. They are considered as false teeth, replacements to

Types of denture

There are several types of dentures available to suit different needs, including:

  • Partial dentures: used when only a few teeth are missing
  • Full dentures: used when all teeth are missing
  • Implant-supported dentures: anchored in place by dental implants for added stability
  • Custom-made dentures: designed specifically for each individual patient

Each type of denture has its advantages and disadvantages, and our dentists will work with you to determine the best option for your needs.

Who Needs Dentures

Dentures are a common solution for people who have lost teeth due to injury, decay, or age. Missing teeth can make it difficult to eat and speak properly, and can also impact your self-confidence. Dentures can improve your ability to chew and speak, restore your facial structure and appearance, and enhance your overall quality of life.

Preparation

The first step in getting dentures is to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists. During the initial appointment, we will perform a dental exam and evaluation, take X-rays and impressions of your teeth, and discuss your treatment options. This will help us determine the best type of denture for your needs and prepare you for the procedure.

Procedure

  1. Creating the denture model: Ater the initial consultation, Once the dentist has determined that dentures are the right option for you, they will take impressions of your mouth to create a model of your teeth and gums. This model will be used to create a custom-fitted denture.
  2. Fitting and adjusting the denture: The dentist will then create a wax or plastic model of the denture, which will be tried on in your mouth to check for fit and comfort. Adjustments will be made as necessary until the denture fits securely and comfortably in your mouth.
  3. Final denture fabrication: Once the wax or plastic model of the denture has been adjusted and approved, the final denture will be fabricated. This process can take a few days to a few weeks, depending on the type of denture being made.
  4. Fitting the final denture: When the final denture is ready, the dentist will place it in your mouth and make any final adjustments to ensure that it fits comfortably and securely.
  5. Follow-up appointments: It is important to attend follow-up appointments with your dentist to ensure that your dentures continue to fit properly and that any issues are addressed promptly. Your dentist will also provide you with instructions on how to properly care for and clean your dentures to help them last as long as possible.

Overall, the denture procedure involves several steps to ensure that the dentures fit properly and are comfortable for the patient. With proper care and maintenance, dentures can last for several years and greatly improve a person’s quality of life.

Benefits

Dentures offer numerous benefits, including:

  1. Improved ability to eat and speak: Missing teeth can make it difficult to chew food properly and speak clearly. Dentures can restore your ability to eat a wider variety of foods and speak more effectively.
  2. Restored facial structure and appearance: When teeth are missing, the face can appear sunken or saggy. Dentures can fill out the cheeks and lips, giving the face a more youthful and fuller appearance.
  3. Enhanced confidence and self-esteem: People who are missing teeth may feel self-conscious about their smile or appearance. Dentures can restore their confidence and improve their overall self-esteem.
  4. Better overall oral health: When teeth are missing, the surrounding teeth can shift and become misaligned. This can cause further dental problems such as tooth decay or gum disease. Dentures can help maintain the alignment of the remaining teeth and prevent future dental issues.
  5. Improved quality of life: Dentures can have a positive impact on a person’s quality of life, allowing them to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. This can lead to greater social interaction and overall well-being.

Overall, dentures can improve a person’s oral health, appearance, and quality of life. They are a common and effective solution for those who have lost teeth due to injury, decay, or age.

Yes, dentures can often be repaired if they are damaged or broken. It is important to have them repaired promptly to prevent further damage or discomfort.

Yes, it is important to continue to see your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings, even if you have dentures. Your dentist can check the fit of the dentures, monitor your oral health, and address any issues or concerns you may have.

The biggest problem with dentures is that they can become loose and uncomfortable over time, causing irritation and difficulty eating and speaking. This is often due to changes in the shape of the gums and bone that occur over time.

A key point to remember about dentures is that they require proper care and maintenance to ensure that they last as long as possible and remain comfortable and functional. Regular cleaning, storing, and maintenance is necessary to prevent bacterial buildup and damage.

A fun fact about dentures is that George Washington, the first President of the United States, had dentures made of materials such as ivory, human teeth, and animal teeth. Despite popular belief, his dentures were not made of wood.
