What are dental fillings?

white teeth filling

Dental fillings are restorations that are used to repair decayed teeth.

They are generally made of either silver or composite resin, as both materials can be used to restore the integrity of a tooth.

Silver fillings are used to treat areas of decay where the decay is not very deep, and the surface of the tooth is still healthy.

These fillings are also known as “inlays” or “onlays.”

Composite resin fillings, on the other hand, are typically used for larger cavities that require more than one filling to restore them.

They can also be used for smaller cavities if it’s decided that a patient would benefit from having a tooth coloured rather than having an unsightly silver filling.

Fillings can be made of either metal or composite resin, depending on the needs of your individual case.

Silver dental fillings are typically more affordable than composite resin ones because they’re less expensive materials; however, they also require more visits over time because they need regular checkups in order to ensure they stay in place properly.

Composite resin fillings tend to be more expensive initially but require fewer visits over time since they tend to hold up better against wear and tear over time.

Dental Filling preparation

Dental fillings are an important part of your dental treatment. You can prepare for the procedure by following these steps:

  1. Schedule an appointment with your dentist so they can see the problem area. They’ll be able to let you know if a filling is needed, and how long it might take to complete the procedure.
  2. If there’s any type of infection in the tooth, it’s important that you let your dentist know before they begin work on your teeth so they can treat it right away!
  3. Make sure that you’ve brushed and flossed thoroughly before coming in for your appointment, as well as avoid foods high in sugar or acidity so that they don’t damage your teeth further before we get started on those fillings!
  4. Bring a list of all medications (prescription or over-the-counter) that you’re currently taking with you to make sure we don’t have any conflicts during our initial consultation session together!

At Every Smile Dentistry, we want you to know that getting a dental filling is a pain-free experience.

The first step is to make an appointment with one of our dentists.

We will listen to your needs and concerns, and then create a treatment plan that meets your individualized needs.

Next, you’ll have an examination where we’ll look at your teeth and gums, as well as review your medical history.

This way we can identify any problems and make sure everything is in good working order before starting the procedure.

We’ll also take X-rays of your teeth so that we can see what’s going on underneath the surface.

Once we know what needs to be done, we’ll perform the procedure right away!

The entire process should only take about 30 minutes or less—and afterwards, you’ll be able to go back home and get back to life as usual with no pain!

4 Types of Fillings. The most common dental filling material are:

teeth with different types of fillings
  1. Amalgam: This type of filling is made of mercury and silver, which means it’s the least expensive option. It also has a high resistance to heat and can withstand pressure from chewing and biting.
  2. Composite: Composite fillings are made of resin and plastic mixed with quartz particles or glass powder, which makes them strong and durable. They’re more expensive than amalgam fillings because they require more time and materials to produce, but they can last for years longer than amalgam fillings do.
  3. Glass ionomers: These are used to repair small cavities in teeth that have been weakened by decay before they can be filled with other materials like composite or ceramic ones instead! They’re more expensive than other materials because they require more time and materials for production as well—but if you have a small cavity that needs filling right away then this is one way to go!
  4. Gold crowns: Gold crowns are the most expensive kind of filling because they’re made out of real gold or porcelain (porcelain fillings) fused onto metal bands that go around each tooth’s root structures underneath their enamel surface layer; these are used to cover up large cavities that can’t be filled with other materials like composite or ceramic ones instead. They’re more expensive than other materials because they require more time and materials for production as well—but if you have a large cavity that needs filling right away then this is one way to go.

Dental Filling Cost & Duration

Dental fillings are the most common type of dental restoration, and they can be applied to a number of different teeth.

Fillings are used to repair decayed or damaged areas in your teeth. These areas are usually caused by tooth decay or gum disease.

The dentist will first need to remove all of the decayed and damaged tissue from your tooth using a drill, which is similar to an electric toothbrush. Then, they will use a dental filling material to cover up the hole created by removing this tissue. They may also add additional layers of ceramic or composite resin if needed.

The cost of dental fillings varies depending on how many teeth need to be treated as well as how long it takes for them to be completed (usually around one hour). The cost can range anywhere from R500 – R900 per tooth.

Dental Fillings FAQs

You can always submit a contact request if you have more questions or email info@everysmile.co.za

The number of times a tooth can be filled depends on how many teeth need to be filled and what type of filling is needed.

If only one or two teeth are damaged and you want to avoid crowns and bridges, then you can get a dental filling done. This is done by drilling into the tooth and filling it with a substance such as gold, composite resin, or porcelain.

The best type of filling for the case depends on several factors including:

* The condition of your teeth (shape, colour)

* If you have fillings in other teeth close by that might need restoration as well (this will increase costs)

The short answer is that yes, your tooth can decay under a filling.

The longer answer is that it’s rare for this to happen, but it’s not impossible.

To understand why this can happen, you need to know how fillings work. A filling is essentially a substance that hardens after being placed in your tooth. The purpose of the filling is to protect the tooth from further decay and to make it stronger. Fillings can be made from materials like porcelain or composite resin (which is what most people get).

If you’ve ever had a cavity, you might have gotten a temporary crown on top of the filling so it wouldn’t be visible until your permanent crown could be made. What happens when you get a temporary crown? The temporary crown protects the tooth underneath it from further decay by covering up any exposed parts of the tooth—including any existing fillings!

If you think about it, this makes sense: if there was no protection on top of the tooth, then food particles could get stuck in between your teeth and under your gums, which would cause more decay over time because food particles are acidic and create an environment where bacteria can thrive.

But what if there were no protection on top of your tooth? If there was no protection on top of your tooth, then food particles could get stuck in between your teeth and under your gums, which would cause more decay over time because food particles are acidic and create an environment where bacteria can thrive.

A tooth filling is a material that is placed in the hole left by a cavity. The filling material can be tooth-coloured or white, depending on what type of filling material is used.

Most people do not feel any pain during the procedure. However, some people may feel discomfort or pressure from the injection of anaesthetic into their gums. Some patients may also experience temporary sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures on the treated tooth after filling treatment.

If you avoid dental fillings, you risk having your tooth decay further until it becomes so severe that the only treatment option will be a root canal. If you need dental work done, don’t hesitate to reach out and see if we can help!

The place is overall beautiful and the reception guys are too friendly. My only issue was the doctor. 1st she didn’t greet or introduce herself I had to ask the assistant what the Doctors name was. Also she was not patient with my son and seemed irritated most of the time. I however have to give thanks to Musa who was the assistant that guy is amazing and super patient he made my son super comfortable and explained every process to me and my son.
