What is an Oral Examination?

Dental teeth cleaning process

An oral examination is a series of tests to check the health of your teeth, gums, and lips. It’s used by dentists to assess whether or not you have any health problems that could affect your ability to chew and speak properly.

A dental oral examination will include X-rays, which are taken using a machine called a “dental radiograph.” This takes pictures of your teeth and surrounding tissue so that your dentist can see if there are any problems with the way they’re growing.

Your dentist may also check for signs of tooth decay, bone loss, gum disease, or gingival recession by looking at the shape and colour of your teeth with a mirror or light. You’ll need to hold still during this part of the exam so that it can be done correctly.

Oral Diseases and their causes

oral diseases examples

Oral diseases are a big deal. They can cause pain, discomfort, and even disability. It’s important to know what to look for in your mouth when you’re feeling sick or don’t feel well, so you can take the steps needed to get better.

There are many different types of oral diseases, and each one has its own causes and treatment options. Here’s a list of some of the more common ones:

1) Gingivitis: This is when your gums become inflamed and swollen due to gum disease or plaque buildup. It usually develops slowly over time but can be improved with proper brushing and flossing habits as well as regular dental checkups.

2) Gingival Bleeding: This happens when pressure builds up between your teeth and gums due to gum disease or plaque buildup. It usually occurs over time, but it can be treated by scaling back on sweets or sugary foods until the problem subsides (this may take several months).

3) Periodontal Disease: This is when bacteria from plaque build-up on your tooth

Oral diseases are caused by a number of factors, including:

  • Bad oral hygiene: If you don’t brush and floss your teeth regularly, you’re more likely to develop plaque buildup. Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on your teeth due to bacteria and food debris.
  • Excess sugar consumption: Eating too much sugar can lead to tooth decay and cavities.
  • Infections: If you have an infection in the mouth, it can cause sores and abscesses, which are painful areas that form when the body’s immune system attacks itself (also known as pyogenic infections).
  • Trauma: Trauma from accidents or other incidents can cause damage to the teeth and surrounding tissues, which may lead to broken teeth or gum disease.

Oral Examination Preparation

Sometimes, you may wonder how to prepare for your next oral examination with a dentist. Well, we’re here to help!

At Every Smile Dentistry, we want to make sure that you feel comfortable and well-informed about your oral exam process. Here are some tips on what you can do before and during your next visit:

1) Get a good night’s sleep the night before the appointment. This will help you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to talk about all of your dental needs.

2) Eat a healthy breakfast before heading out so that you have energy throughout the day. It’s also a good idea to bring along some snacks if you think they’ll be necessary during treatment!

3) Bring any records or X-rays from previous visits so that they can be included in your treatment plan. We recommend bringing at least two sets just in case something gets lost or misplaced during treatment planning time—it happens!

4) Bring any questions or concerns about past procedures or future plans (like getting braces). Our team wants to make sure that everyone feels like they’re getting exactly what they need from their visit—so don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Procedure

open mouth oral examination

Our oral examination is a thorough, professional and complete examination. Your teeth and gums are inspected during a dental examination. The majority of kids and adults should visit the dentist every six months.

These examinations are crucial for maintaining dental health. If oral health issues are not treated right away, they may become unpleasant and dangerous.

The dentist will examine your teeth, gums and jawbone. They will also look at the condition of your lips and tongue, as well as the rest of your mouth.

  • The dentist will ask you to open your mouth wide and may use a mirror to show you the inside of your mouth. The dentist may also look at the roof of your mouth with a tool called an “oral mirror”.
  • They will check for signs of tooth decay or gum diseases, such as redness, swelling or bleeding gums. They will also look for cavities between your teeth using a special light called an “explorer”.
  • If necessary, they will clean out any plaque – a hard film made from food particles trapped between teeth – using special tools called “floss picks”.
  • They may also polish your teeth if there are any stains on them that cannot be removed by brushing alone. Every Smile Dentistry offers this service in all of its four locations, that is East London, Soshanguve, Mthatha and Mdantsane

Is there anything else I should know about Oral Care

To keep your mouth healthy, you should take care of your teeth and gums by having regular dental exams and practising good dental habits at home. The following steps constitute good home oral care:

  • Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled brush twice a day.
  • Brush for approximately two minutes.
  • Use fluoride-containing toothpaste.
  • Fluoride aids in the prevention of tooth decay and cavities.
  • Floss your teeth at least once a day.
  • Flossing removes plaque, which can cause tooth and gum damage.
  • Every three to four months, replace your toothbrush.
  • Eat a healthy diet that excludes or limits sweets and sugary drinks.
  • If you do consume sweets, brush your teeth right away.
  • You should not smoke.

Oral Examination FAQs

You can always submit a contact request if you have more questions or email info@everysmile.co.za

A dental exam helps us identify problems before they become serious. It allows us to detect early changes in your smile, including discolouration, cracks, chips, and other cosmetic flaws. This makes it easier to treat these problems before they worsen.

It also lets us see whether you have periodontal disease (gum disease). Periodontal disease causes inflammation of the tissues surrounding your teeth and bones. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss.

It depends on your age, gender, medical history, lifestyle, and overall health. But most people should visit their dentist every six months. Your dentist will recommend when you should schedule your next appointment based on your needs.

During your first visit, our dentist will ask questions about your general health, your family dental history, and your current medications. The Doctor will then examine your teeth and gums. You might feel some pressure as the doctor brushes your teeth and checks for signs of decay.

During subsequent visits, your dentist will check your teeth and gums again. She or he will also look for signs of gum disease, such as bleeding gums, swollen

The place is overall beautiful and the reception guys are too friendly. My only issue was the doctor. 1st she didn’t greet or introduce herself I had to ask the assistant what the Doctors name was. Also she was not patient with my son and seemed irritated most of the time. I however have to give thanks to Musa who was the assistant that guy is amazing and super patient he made my son super comfortable and explained every process to me and my son.
