Types of braces available

different types of braces

East London offers a wide range of treatment options when it comes to braces.

  1. Traditional metal braces: These are the most common type of braces and consist of metal brackets that are bonded to the front of the teeth and connected with a wire. Metal braces are strong and effective, but they are also the most visible.
  2. Ceramic braces: These are similar to traditional metal braces, but the brackets are made of a tooth-coloured or clear material that is less noticeable. Ceramic braces are less visible than metal braces, but they may be more fragile and may require more frequent adjustments.
  3. Clear aligners: Clear aligners are a newer option that consists of a series of custom-made, transparent plastic trays that fit over the teeth. Clear aligners are virtually invisible and can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing. However, they may not be suitable for more severe misalignment cases.

Patients in East London should discuss their options with a local orthodontist to determine the best choice for their specific needs and preferences.

The orthodontist will consider factors such as the severity of the misalignment, the patient’s age, and the patient’s oral hygiene habits, among other things.

The procedure of getting braces in East London

  1. Consultation with an orthodontist: The first step in getting braces is to schedule a consultation with an orthodontist. During the consultation, the orthodontist will examine the patient’s teeth and jaws, take X-rays and possibly other diagnostic records, and discuss the patient’s treatment goals and options. The orthodontist will then create a treatment plan and provide the patient with an estimate of the treatment time and cost.

  2. Placement of braces: Once the patient has decided to proceed with treatment and has received all necessary dental work, the orthodontist will place the braces. This typically involves bonding the brackets to the teeth and connecting them with a wire. The orthodontist will make adjustments to the wire to gradually move the teeth into the desired position.

  3. Regular adjustments: After the braces are placed, the patient will need to visit the orthodontist for regular adjustments. These appointments are typically scheduled every 4-8 weeks. During the adjustments, the orthodontist will tighten the wire or change it for a new one to continue moving the teeth. The patient may experience some discomfort for a few days after each adjustment.

  4. Duration of treatment: The length of treatment will depend on the severity of the misalignment and the individual patient’s response to treatment. On average, patients can expect to wear braces for 18-30 months, but some cases may be shorter or longer. The orthodontist will provide the patient with an estimate of the treatment time at the beginning of treatment.

It is important for patients to attend all scheduled appointments and follow the orthodontist’s instructions to ensure that treatment progresses as efficiently as possible.

Benefits of getting braces

braces installation process
  1. Improved oral health: Straight teeth are easier to clean and maintain, which can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Braces can also correct problems such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites, which can contribute to difficulty in cleaning teeth and increase the risk of tooth wear, gum irritation, and jaw pain.

  2. A more attractive smile: Braces can help improve the appearance of the teeth and smile. Crooked or crowded teeth can be difficult to clean and can give the appearance of being unhealthy. Straight teeth, on the other hand, can make the smile look more attractive and improve self-esteem.

  3. Improved function of the teeth: Teeth that are properly aligned can chew and bite food more efficiently, which can improve digestion and overall nutrition. Braces can also help correct problems with speech that may be caused by misaligned teeth.

  4. Long-term benefits: The benefits of braces are not just cosmetic. Straightening the teeth can also help improve the overall function and health of the mouth, which can have long-term benefits for the patient’s overall health and well-being.

It is important to note that braces are not just for children and teenagers. Many adults also benefit from orthodontic treatment to correct misalignment and improve their oral health and appearance.

Tips on how to take care of braces

Braces before and after

Patients with braces should be careful not to damage their braces or delay treatment by missing appointments or not following the orthodontist’s instructions.

They should avoid activities that may cause trauma to the braces, such as contact sports or biting into hard objects, and they should be careful not to play with or bend the wires or brackets.

  1. Wear a mouthguard: Patients with braces should wear a mouthguard while playing sports to protect their teeth and braces from injury. The orthodontist can provide a custom-fitted mouthguard or recommend an over-the-counter option.
  2. Keep appointments: It is important for patients with braces to attend all scheduled appointments for adjustments and check-ups. These appointments are necessary for the orthodontist to monitor the progress of treatment and make any necessary adjustments. Missing appointments or not following the orthodontist’s instructions can delay treatment and increase the overall time in braces.

By following these tips and working closely with their orthodontist, patients with braces can ensure that their treatment is as successful and efficient as possible.

Cost of braces in East London

  1. Factors that influence the cost of braces: The cost of braces can vary depending on a number of factors, including the type of braces, the duration of treatment, and the complexity of the case. Traditional metal braces and ceramic braces may have a similar cost, while clear aligners may be more expensive. In general, treatment for adults may be more costly than treatment for children because it may require more time and more complex procedures.

  2. Coverage by dental insurance: Some dental insurance plans may cover a portion of the cost of braces, but the coverage can vary depending on the plan and the specific procedures. Patients should check with their insurance provider to understand their coverage and any deductibles or co-payments.

  3. Payment options: Orthodontists may offer payment plans or financing options to make braces more affordable. Patients can discuss these options with their orthodontist to find a solution that fits their budget.

  4. Financial assistance: Patients who are unable to afford braces may be able to receive financial assistance through local dental organizations or charitable programs. Patients can check with these organizations for more information about eligibility and the application process.

It is important for patients to discuss the cost of braces with their orthodontist and to understand their payment options and any potential out-of-pocket expenses.

This can help ensure that the patient is able to afford the necessary treatment and can make informed decisions about their oral health care.
